Dan Linstedt wrote in his blog post Data Vault Vs Dimensional – Part 3 “… you’ve experienced successes with the Star Schema in terabyte environments, or with a lot of source systems, or with real-time, then I’d love to hear from you. Please enlighten me as to what you’ve done that works, so that I may learn how you succeeded.”
Based on this invitation I responded to this blog post of Dan Linstedt. Inergy (a BI in the Cloud service provider) has done many successful data warehouse implementations with star schemas (in combination with a Historical Data Staging Area) in terabyte environments with many source systems. Another reason to respond is that I have read a lot about the Data Vault and have audited data warehouses based on the Data Vault, but I still don’t see the added value of the Data Vault as a modeling technique. And I really want to learn what the Data Vault could add to our architecture.
I was happy to see that Dan responded quickly to my comments and questions. However, I still do not see the added value of the Data Vault. In this document “Response to Dan Linstedt – added value of the DV” you will find the reasons why.
